Goal Statement

The purpose of this project is to take the familiar story of homecoming and tell it from the most unusual circumstance of a young girl forced to leave her war torn home of Uganda now set to return for the first time 28 years later.

As both an African and American filmmaker this is my story.  I feel it is important to hear the stories from the African Diaspora. This documentary will create the opportunity to dispel stereotypes about Africa and find common ground in our cultural differences.

Immigration, assimilation, culture and belonging are familiar themes in America's history.  CLOSER TO HOME addresses these ideas from a personal journey.  While many in America have not known what it is like to have to leave your country based on the chaos that war brings, most everyone can understand the feelings and emotions that are attributed to a person's sense of home.  Where do we come from?  What defines our home? Is it the origin of our birth or perhaps the number of years of residence in any particular place?

With more years in America than in Uganda am I more American or Ugandan?  English is now my first language and the United States my place of citizenship.  How much of the Uganda of my childhood is still there?  Anyone that has ever left, or even lost his or her home and longs to return can identify with this story.  Anyone that has ever returned home and felt a bit like a stranger can identify with this story.

I welcome the opportunity to share my journey with the diverse audience.
