Distribution / Outreach CLOSER TO HOME is a documentary that will reach two specific niche audiences. First it appeals to any individual that was ever forced to leave their home or immigrate to another place. This connection can be made across centuries beginning with the early American Slave trade, to the European Jews that came during World War II, to the Vietnamese that came in the 1970's to the more recent immigration of refugees that came here from Bosnia in the 1990's. The story of the displaced is one that appears throughout history. CLOSER TO HOME is a rare look at one such story from the point of view of the displaced. The second niche audience is the African community in America. Stories about Africa are rarely told. And when they are, they are often told by outsiders telling stories of chaos and poverty with no real look at the culture or the people. CLOSER TO HOME is an intimate look inside the African country with the people of Uganda telling their own history. On a larger scope CLOSER TO HOME is a timely film, of interest to a larger audience, given today's current political climate. The ideas of dictatorship, war, and innocent civilians are something most Americans hear about every day. When a dictator is overthrown does everything just get better? Much like the fighting in Iraq seems to have escalated since the capture of Saddam Hussein, so did the violence in Uganda worsen after Idi Amin was gone. It was during "reconstruction" from the dictatorship that my parents, in fear for my safety, sent me to America. How does a country, more importantly its people, heal? How do they rebuild and move on? CLOSER TO HOME give us a first hand look at a country and its people 28 years after the war. My primary distribution plan is to reach out for Public Television Broadcast. With the range of people that would find interest in this piece and the larger audience that Public Television provides, CLOSER TO HOME could be viewed by a diverse cross-section of American Culture. I also plan to submit the documentary to film festivals that focus on Documentary Film like HotDocs and SilverDocs. In addition, because of the cross-cultural nature of the piece I will also seek international distribution through festivals and broadcast possibilities abroad. << Synopsis • Goal Statement • Treatment • Distribution >> |
